Super Tuesday Results: Key Races to Watch

Tonight, 854 Republican delegates are at stake across 15 states. This accounts for more than a third of all delegates available in the race for the nomination. Here’s what to watch for.
Nikki Haley still thinks she has a role to play in the Republican primary. Haley told NBC she would stay in the race “as long as we’re competitive” with front-runner former President Donald Trump. A little more than a third of Republican delegates are up for grabs in 15 contests across the country on Super Tuesday. In many of them, Haley could get locked out of delegates entirely if she can’t beat Trump at either the statewide or congressional district level. Haley’s delegate path is full of obstacles unless she can start winning primaries.

Former President Donald J. Trump capped off a clean sweep of Republican delegates in Michigan on Saturday during a raucous convention, which further exposed a deep fissure in the state party that threatens to fester in one of the most important battleground states. Mr. Trump, the Republican front-runner, amassed at least 90 percent of the vote in all but one of the state’s 13 congressional districts against former Gov. Nikki Haley of South Carolina, who was ambassador to the United Nations under Mr. Trump. A simple majority was needed in each district to win its share of delegates at the caucus-style event, giving Mr. Trump 39, to go along with the 12 that he won in Michigan’s primary, which was held on Tuesday. Ms. Haley emerged from that contest with four delegates.

Former President Donald Trump trounced Nikki Haley in her home state of South Carolina's primary. And if Trump does as well as his campaign predicts, he could secure the GOP nomination by March 12. Haley was left as the sole remaining major candidate to oppose Trump in January after Florida Gov. South Carolina's Republican delegates are uniquely not bound to a specific candidate post-primary election, making it difficult to calculate the exact number of delegates each candidate will finish with. If Trump and his reelection campaign continue down their established path of dominant primary victories, he'll be incredibly close to blazing past the majority mark he needs to secure the Republican nomination.

South Carolina voters head to the polls on Saturday to cast ballots in a Republican presidential primary that could well determine the political fate of the state’s former governor, Nikki Haley, in her long-shot bid to derail former President Donald J. Trump’s march to the Republican nomination. Here is what to watch in the Palmetto State as votes are tallied Saturday night. Iowa was called for Mr. Trump before the caucuses had even ended. Polls in South Carolina will close at 7 p.m., and Ms. Haley is expected to speak in Charleston once the winner is declared. The Trump campaign will hold a “watch party” in the state capital of Columbia, where the former president is expected to speak.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A GOP legislative effort to prevent Virginia children from using the popular video-sharing app TikTok — an idea backed by Republican Gov. Trump Wins Final Delegate Out of New Hampshire

WASHINGTON (AP) — Former President Donald Trump has won the last remaining unresolved delegate from New Hampshire, giving him a 13-9 delegate advantage in the Granite State over former U.N. Unlike in the Democratic presidential primaries, where all states follow a mostly uniform delegate allocation procedure, Republican delegate rules vary state by state. These whole percentages are then multiplied by the total number of Republican delegates at stake, which in New Hampshire is 22. This is sometimes referred to as a “winner’s bonus.”Based on these rules, the final delegate allocation in New Hampshire is 13 for Trump and 9 for Haley. After Iowa and New Hampshire, Trump leads Haley in the overall delegate count, 33-17.

While the primary contests in Iowa and New Hampshire can be critical for giving candidates early momentum — those two states represent a small number of delegates. Whoever wins the GOP nomination needs to win at least 1,215 out of 2,429 delegates awarded as part of the primary process. Winning the GOP nomination requires at least 1,215 out of 2,429 delegates awarded as part of the primary process. Shortly after CNN projected that Trump would win New Hampshire, Trump had 32 delegates compared with Haley’s 17. In 13 primaries and three caucuses, 874 delegates, 36% of the Republican total, will be up for grabs, including in California, the state with the most Republican delegates.

Ambassador Nikki Haley will run in the Feb. 6 primary that the Nevada secretary of state is required to operate. Trump will run instead in the Feb. 8 caucuses operated by the state Republican Party, which has decided that only its caucuses will count for the purposes of awarding delegates. Trump allies within the state Republican Party engineered changes last year that set them up for caucuses and imposed restrictions that rivals including Haley and Florida Gov. They're part of a broader pattern of state Republican parties closely aligning with Trump as he looks to quickly lock in the Republican nomination. Haley, the last major contender against Trump, is bypassing Nevada altogether and instead campaigning in her home state of South Carolina, which holds a Feb. 24 primary.

“I say the general election begins tonight,” said Trump-adversary-turned-advocate Vivek Ramaswamy, who was standing at the former president’s side during his New Hampshire victory speech. Both Biden and Trump have loud detractors within their parties and glaring political liabilities. The earliest either Trump or Biden could clinch enough delegates to become his party's presumptive nominee is March. Haley beat Trump on Tuesday among Republican primary voters who identified as either moderates or independents, according to AP VoteCast, a survey of the electorate. About half of the state's Republican primary voters also said they are very or somewhat concerned that Trump is too extreme to win the general election.

What to expectThe Republican caucuses begin at 8 p.m. Eastern time at hundreds of precinct locations across the state. Voters must appear in person (except for some overseas and military voters) and be registered with the party, though same-day registration is allowed. After the results are tallied, they are read aloud before being sent to the state party. In 2016, precincts began reporting results just after 8:30 p.m. Eastern time, and nearly all results were in by 12:50 a.m. Eastern time. The state’s 40 delegates (just 1.6 percent of Republican delegates nationwide) will be allocated to candidates proportionally based on the final vote count.

CNN —Winning individual primaries and caucuses is just one step in the long path to winning a party’s presidential nomination. Performing well in primaries and caucuses equals delegates, and the larger goal is amassing the magic number of delegates to secure a nomination before delegate voting at the party convention. In 2016, in his first of three White House runs, Donald Trump hit the magic number on May 26. In 13 primaries and three caucuses, 874 delegates, 36% of the Republican total, will be up for grabs, including in California, the state with the most Republican delegates. If there is no clear winner during the primaries, delegates could engage in rounds of voting at the convention to select the party’s presidential candidate.
